Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Take a moment today to reflect on the importance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. He was a man who fought for civil rights, but also had a strong focus on the need to do work that benefited others. The holiday is recognized as a federal holiday and John Conyers, a Congressman from Michigan, was the man who first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday.

Here are a few facts for you about MLK Day:

  • Illinois is first state to adopt Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday
  • Congress passes, President Reagan signs, legislation creating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 1983
  • It’s always celebrated the 3rd Monday in January
