Detroit Business Consulting Attends Conference in Indianapolis

Detroit Business Consulting will be in Indianapolis today and tomorrow for a conference for sales, marketing and nonprofit professionals from the Midwest. This conference is even more exciting for us because managers Michael Rosenberg and Laura Bolter were both chosen to speak at the conference. Michael has spoken at both regional and national conferences before, and we are excited to see Laura speak for the first time since joining our company.  Graduating college with a Communications degree, Laura is no stranger to public speaking.

World’s Simplest Management Secret

Forget what you learned in those management books. There’s really only one way to ensure that everyone on your team excels.

Management books have it all wrong. They all try to tell you how to manage “people.”

It’s impossible to manage “people”; it’s only possible to manage individuals. And because individuals differ from one another, what works with one individual may not work with somebody else.

Some individuals thrive on public praise; others feel uncomfortable when singled out.

Some individuals are all about the money; others thrive on challenging assignments.

Some individuals need mentoring; others find advice to be grating.

The trick is to manage individuals the way that THEY want to be managed, rather than the way that YOU’d prefer to be managed.

The only way to do this is to ASK.

In your first (or next) meeting with each direct report ask:

  • How do you prefer to be managed?
  • What can I do to help you excel?
  • What types of management annoy you?

Listen (really listen) to the response and then, as far as you are able, adapt your coaching, motivation, compensation, and so forth to match that individual’s needs.

BTW, a savvy employee won’t wait for you to ask; he or she will tell you outright what works. When this happens, you’re crazy not to take that employee’s advice!

Unfortunately, most individuals aren’t that bold, which is why it’s up to you to find out how to get the best out of them.

And you’ll never get that out of a management book.

There is no one-size-fits-all in a world where everyone is unique.

Inc.com has great articles on leadership, management and entrepreneurship that we love reading and want to pass along.

Detroit Business Consulting, Inc. Trains in New York City

Detroit Business Consulting, Inc. sent two high-performing Account Managers to New York City for the week to train a new office on the Comcast Business Class campaign.  Daniel Stevens and Anthony Luckow were selected based on their sales and training history in the office. After launching our campaign in early March, our company was asked to train other companies in New York City and Connecticut on the campaign.  Last year we set national sales records for our client, so we’re on the right path to do the same in 2013.

Later this month, half of our team at our Troy office will be going to NYC for training on our non profit campaign we are launching.  Although we have done numerous charity events over the past 5 years, this is our first client that is a non profit company.  We are excited about these new opportunities!

Detroit Business Consulting is ready for March Madness to begin!  Everyone in the office filled out their brackets yesterday and we’ll have an on-going competition until the end of the tournament to see whose predictions were the most accurate.  The winner will receive a $100 cash prize!

To add to the competition, three people from the office will be going to the Michigan State and University of Michigan games at the Palace of Auburn Hills!

Good luck everyone!

Super bowl Sunday with Detroit Business Consulting

Last Sunday Detroit Business Consulting came together to cheer on their picks for this year’s Super bowl.  The event took place at manager Mike Rosenberg’s house in Troy.  In true Detroit Business Consulting fashion, a friendly office competition took place during the game.  Each employee earned squares throughout the week leading up until the big game.  Finding out the square winners at the end of each quarter was just as exciting as the actual game.  The contest winners were Joel Fanning, Anthony Luckow, April Kosinski and Danny Stevens. Whether you were there for the Ravens, the 49ers or just the food and commercials, this event was a great time for everyone!

Detroit Business Consulting’s Night Out in Royal Oak

Each week we do something together outside of the office.  This week we ventured out in Royal Oak to Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle.  We were entertained by three different comedians and got to enjoy appetizers and drinks at the comedy club.  Our weekly “office nights” give us a chance to do something fun together in the area and get to know the people that we work with better.  Our adventure last night was planned by Laura Bolter- thanks for planning a fun night for us Laura!  You can get to know Laura and other team members better on our website or Facebook.
